A brief description of the process from topic submission to defense
Conditions for submitting a thesis
A student may submit a thesis when they meet the requirements for enrollment in the 3rd year of an undergraduate study program or when they meet the requirements for enrollment in the 2nd year of an MA study programme.
Submission of thesis title
Once the student has agreed on the thesis title with the mentor, the later submits the thesis title by sending the final text of the thesis disposition from their email as an attachment to the professional service and the candidate for information.
Confirmation of the submitted thesis title
The title is accepted and confirmed when the study committee confirms the selected title and appoints the mentor or co-mentor and the thesis defense committee.
The approved topic is valid for one year (12 months) from the date of confirmation. At the student’s proposal, which also includes the mentor’s consent and must be submitted by the student before the end of the initial period, the study committee may extend the deadline for producing the approved thesis by a maximum of twelve months. If the candidate still does not submit the thesis for defense within this time, he or she must submit another (same or new) topic.
Language of the thesis
The thesis is usually registered and written in the Slovenian language.
At the special proposal of the student, submitted in agreement with the mentor when applying for the disposition, the study committee may approve writing the thesis in English if the programme or part of the programme was conducted in this language, or if there are justified reasons for this, such as a foreign student, mentor, committee member, etc.
Composition of the thesis defense committee
The thesis defense committee consists of at least the president of the committee and the mentor or co-mentor.
Structure and form of the thesis
The structure, technical aspects, the method of citing used literature and sources, etc. are determined by the Guidelines for the Preparation of the Layout and Theses of the Faculty of Public Administration
Technical and content review of the thesis
The student submits the thesis in electronic form to the address: referatdiplome@fu.uni-lj.si.
The Faculty’s professional service checks whether the thesis is prepared in accordance with the Guidelines for the Preparation of the Layout and Theses of the Faculty of Public Administration from a formal and technical point of view, and informs the mentor, any co-mentor and the student. The mentor confirms the content adequacy of the thesis.
The professional service forwards the formally and technically adequate diploma or master’s thesis by e-mail for review to the chairman of the defense (and to the student and mentor for information), who can make comments within 10 days for diploma theses or within 15 days for master’s theses and forwards them to the student, mentor and professional service.
Submission of documentation for the defense
The student submits the final version of the thesis to the professional service in a PDF/A file.
Defense of the thesis
After the introductory presentation by the chairman of the defense committee, the student independently presents his or her work, usually within 10 minutes for the diploma thesis and 20 minutes for the master’s thesis. The members of the defense committee each ask the student up to three oral questions.
Graduation Certificate
The Academic Service issues a certificate of completion to the student immediately after a successful defense, with the day of the defense being considered the day of the professional title. The certificate is temporary and valid until the diploma is issued.
