Content
- Professional Communication in English classes focus on developing the future academics’ abilities to express themselves in spoken and written mode in academic context, as well as improving their language use and pronunciation.
- Practice in producing acceptable writing for academic purposes (IMRAD) is provided in terms of set coursework and monthly timed writing tasks in collaboration with subject teachers.
- Practice in becoming a competent reader of academic texts with vocabulary work (nouns, verbs, adverbs, phrases relevant to academic writing…) is provided through set reading and monthly timed reading tasks.
- A feedback on the students’ writing and reading is provided during office hours or at students’ request in collaboration with core subjects’ teachers.
- Students are instructed on how to summarise their professional spoken texts.
- Throughout the course students are guided how to become a more effective and independent learners and users of online resources in preparation of their presentations.
Objectives and competences
Student can
- write more effectively and accurately with academic context, to follow the conventions of academic writing in English and incorporate this into their future research, study and work environment.
- develop opinions and arguments specific to academic environment in relation to the study programme Administration.
- read confidently and critically and use various information sources effectively.
- follow and participate in discussions based on reading texts.
- deliver a confident and competent presentation on academic topics and communicate effectively and play a constructive part in varied oral exchanges.
- translate their knowledge from Slovenian into English and vice-versa.
- discuss relevant topics related to their study programme in the field of economics, law and informatics.
Competences

- capacity to understand academic texts in English.
- capacity to read more complex academic texts.
- ability to interpret and summarise academic texts.
- knowledge and use of grammatical structures for effective written and spoken communication in academic context.
- presenting and justifying arguments pro and contra, opinions.
- ability to give a complex presentation on a professional topic, ability to write summaries, and ability to use professional terminology.
